Most common cancer in children under 15 years of age is acute lymphoblastic leukemia, whose most commonly used treatment is chemotherapy. The latter, in addition to being able to destroy cancer cells, also generates adverse side effects. Chemotherapy affects the central nervous system (CNS) at the structural level and at the brain connection level, causing serious negative effects on cognitive functions and academic performance. The present work is a systematic review that seeks to obtain updated information regarding the effects of induction chemotherapy on cognition and academic performance in patients surviving Acute Lymphatic Leukemia. Following the PRISMA protocol, the Q-test suggests that the final sample of 12 studies (Q(11) = 47.40, p<0.001, τ2=0.18) is heterogeneous so the effects found may be associated with other variables. Nine studies focused on the effects on cognitive functions and only 3 on the effects on academic performance. The moderating variables were not repeated in the studies and therefore could not be analyzed statistically. This study highlights the lack of experimental research with control groups to study the impact of induction chemotherapy received at an early age. In addition, it suggests factors that can be considered in future research to ensure homogeneity in studies with similar characteristics.
