Introduction: Statins are a pharmacological group used to reduce cardiovascular risk caused by dyslipidemia, but studies report adverse effects of statins such as increased risk for the development of diabetes mellitus. Objective: To determine the association between the use of statins and the development of hyperglycemia in patients with hypertension. Materials and methods: Retrospective cohort. The study population were hypertensive adult patients over 18 years of age, who were treated in a private health network and who had at least two blood glucose measurements between the years 2012-2018. The collection of information was carried out from an anonymized database. The univariate analysis of the characteristics of the participants and the bivariate analysis were carried out dividing the participants by the use of statin. Results: A total of 2322 eligible participants were obtained. It was found that 42.9% of statin users and 43.3% of non-users develop hyperglycemia (OR=0.97; IC 95% [0.81-1.17], p=0.8). Conclusion: The results suggest that there was no significant effect on the development of hyperglycemia in users and non-users of statin therapy, in a routine setting in a private health network in Lima.
