The objective of the study was to evaluate the fertility and viability of hydatid cysts of bovine’s liver and lungs confiscated in the Virgen de Mercedes slaughterhouse, in Huancayo province, department of Junín, Peru. The Prevalence that was determined with respect to animals sacrificed was 35.6% (124/348). To determine the viability and fertility of the cysts, 68 infected lungs and 22 infected livers were evaluated and randomly selected from all infected organs. A total of 608 hydatid cysts were observed, 82.6% (502) of pulmonary location and 17.4% (106) of liver location. Fifteen fertile cysts (2.5%) were found and of these, only 10 were viable cysts, representing 1.6% of total. Given that 98.4% of the cysts were not viable, it is suggested that bovine has a minor importance in the maintenance of the life cycle of the parasite in the central highlands. The results of the study contribute to the characterization of bovine cystic equinococcosis in the central and can be incorporated into the baseline evidence with a view to implementing specific control strategies and thus strengthening food safety in the Andes.
