The purpose of the study was to evaluate the influence of the COVID-19 pandemic on dog ownership and rabies vaccination practice among the inhabitants of Lima Metropolitan area and Callao by comparing the results of the National Budget Program Survey (ENAPRES) developed by the National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI) between 2017 and 2020. In 2020, the percentage of dog ownership was higher (47.5%) than in other years. In addition, the percentage was lower in Lima Centro in 2017 (31.6%) and higher in Lima Sur in 2019 (54.4%) comparing the results of the years under study. Socioeconomic status (ESE) A had lower percentages (32.5% to 38.9%) compared to ESE E (51.5% to 56.2%). The average dog per household was between 1.5 and 1.6. The proportion of respondents who vaccinate their dog was higher in Lima Centro in 2019 (95.3%) and it was lower in Lima Este in 2020 (80.7%). ESE A and B obtained higher values (91 to 96%) and ESE E lower values (80.7 to 87.9%). Rabies vaccination coverage was lower in Callao and Lima Este (76.9% to 88%) and higher in Lima Centro (88.8% to 95.9%). ESE A and B had greater coverage, ESE A in 2017 and 2020 (95% and 90.7%) and ESE B in 2018 and 2019 (94.8% and 94.8%). The ESE E had less coverage in 2020 (77.5%). In 2020, the number of vaccinated dogs decreased to 86.5%, while in previous years the values were higher than 90.6%. Spearman's correlation indicated that the relationship between ESE and dog ownership was inverse (r = - 0.95), while in vaccination coverage the correlation was direct (r = 0.813).
