Background: The need for dental treatment in patients with chronic diseases (CD) requires renewed knowledge and attitudes of the dentist for its correct identification. In Peru there are no reference studies that evaluate the dimensions to obtain the real need, the skills that the dentist needs and other factors that affect the oral and general health of adults. Objective: To determine the association between chronic diseases and the need for dental treatment in patients of the EPE Service of the Teaching Dental Center (CDD) of the UPCH in Lima- Peru, 2016 - 2019. Materials and methods: Cross-sectional, retrospective, observational and analytical study. The EPE service database was used (April 2016 to December 2019), the sample was 1988 records of adults over 18 years of age. The variables were evaluated: Need for dental treatment, Chronic diseases, pharmacological treatment, last visit to the dentist, origin, age group and sex. The dependent variable was the need for dental treatment, which was validated by expert judgment. A descriptive, bivariate (Chi square) and multivariate (Log-linear Poisson Regression) analysis was performed. Results: It was found that the presence of 3 or more chronic diseases, consumption of more than 2 drugs in older adults was associated with the need for treatment of High complexity vs. Low complexity with an OR 4.54 (95% CI: 2.03-10.17); Likewise, when the model was adjusted, the same ORa association was found: 2.73 (95% CI: 1.06-7.07). 69.42% presented 2 or more CDs, two thirds of the population consumed 2 or more drugs, 56.14% were older adults, 65.39% of the population were women. Conclusion: It was evidenced that having more than 3 chronic diseases would have an impact on a high complexity in dental treatment versus a low complexity treatment.
