OBJECTIVE. SARS-COV-2 infection has high fatality rates. People with diabetes mellitus (DM) develop severe forms of infection with high mortality rates. The aim of this study is to determine the proportion of hospital mortality, as well as hospitalization time and the factors related to hospital mortality of patients with DM and a diagnosis of COVID-19 in a tertiary care hospital in Lima, Peru. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS. The study was transversal, observational and retrospective. Every 18-year-old patient with a history of DM and moderate/ severe COVID-19 was included. For the mortality analysis, the chi-square test and Fisher exact test were used. Kaplan-Meier curves were used for survival analysis. RESULTS. The study included 133 participants with the diagnosis of moderate and severe COVID-19 and DM. The mortality rate was 25%. Median hospitalization time was 17 days. In the analysis of factors associated with mortality, it was observed that people with 60 years and older (p=0.01), O2Sat < 92% (p=0.04) and blood glucose levels ≥ 140 mg / dl had a positive association with hospital mortality. CONCLUSIONS. In people with diabetes hospitalized for COVID-19, hospital mortality was 25%. More than 50% of patients had hospital stays longer than 15 days. Glycemia ≥ 140 mg / dl is a factor that decreases survival and increases mortality, as well as age ≥ 60 years and saturation less than 92%.
