This research paper aims to report the strengthening of self-care skills in a teenager with intellectual disability. General objective is strengthen self-care skills in the teenager with intellectual disability to increase personal autonomy. Specific objectives are to psychoeducate the parent in the different operant conditioning techniques to reinforce skills learned at the therapy center at home, to develop self-care skills in the personal hygiene area, such as washing hands, brushing teeth and combing hair correctly, and to acquire communication skills of his basic necessities and develop autonomy during feeding. Data was collected through observation, unstructured interviews, behavioral checklists, the application of the Stanford-Binet test and the application of a frequency registry. Techniques used on the teenager to establish different skills were positive reinforcement, token economy, time-out, pictograms, modeling, chaining, and psychoeducation. The results are through the intervention, the teenager was able to develop self-care skills that improve his autonomy levels. The conclusion is the teenager was able to develop self-care skills in the personal hygiene area: hand washing, teeth brushing, and hair combing. Additionally, he developed communication skills to ask to go the bathroom and was able to independently use eating utensils during meals.
