The objective of this study was to determine the association between PM2.5 and NO₂ and monthly anemia cases in children aged 6 to 59 months residing in the areas of North Lima and East Lima who attended medical check-ups during the years 2016 and 2017. The time series methodology was used, and Poisson regressions were performed to evaluate both pollutants independently and simultaneously. Exposure to PM2.5 was associated with an increase in monthly cases of anemia between 9% and 17% for simple lags and between 18% and 21% for moving averages. Exposure to NO₂ was related to an increase between 5% and 11% for simple lags and between 11% and 13% for moving averages in anemia monthly counts. The estimators for both pollutants slightly decreased as the exposure windows increased. The positive association remained significant for all moving average lags in the multi-contaminant analysis. These associations were observed at concentrations that are below national and international air quality standards, particularly for NO₂. Mid-term exposure to PM2.5 and NO₂ is associated with an increase in monthly cases of anemia in children aged 6 to 59 months who reside in East Lima and North Lima.
