Background: Since March 2020, when the first case of the SARS-CoV 2 virus was detected in Peru, health workers were forced to use personal protective equipment (PPE) during their long working hours. Some international studies have reported several dermatological conditions caused by PPE like dermatitis, pressure induced injuries, and exacerbations of chronic dermatological diseases. Objective: This study aims to determine de frequency and characteristics of dermatologic lesions due to the use of PPE in health workers in 2 third level hospitals in Lima, Peru during the COVID-19 pandemic. Materials and method: We surveyed a total of 225 health workers at Arzobispo Loayza National Hospital and Cayetano Heredia Hospital. Subjects were questioned about the presence and characteristics of dermatologic lesions. Results: 80.89% (N=182) of those surveyed reported having developed visible skin lesions or alterations. Erythema was the most frequently reported lesion by 29.51% (N=85) of subjects, followed by comedones reported by 17.36% (N=50). 76.74% (N=221) of the reported injuries were located on the face and the remaining lesions were located on the extremities. 52.20% (N=95) of those who reported having skin lesions indicated that they had received treatment for them. Conclusions: There is an elevated frequency of skin lesions among health workers and a significant number of them are not receiving the medical attention they deserve.
