Objective: To determine the prevalence of major amputation and characteristics of patients with lower limb amputation as a complication of type 2 diabetes mellitus. Material and methods: Analytical cross-sectional study, included patients with DM2 who had lower extremity amputation attributed to diabetic foot in the hospitalization area of the Hospital del Norte IESS Ceibos, May 2017 to March 2019, Guayaquil – Ecuador. The prevalence of amputation was determined higher overall and according to clinical characteristics. We found the prevalence ratio of major amputation crude and adjusted to clinical variables. Results: We included 246 people with the highest frequency in the age group of 65 to 74 years (32.5%) and in men with 66.3%. the major amputation (infra and supracondylea) was 57.7%; and 29.7% an amputation was performed 6 months after the first amputation. 49.6% of the amputations were Wagner 5; leukocytosis was present in 100% of patients; the degree of vascular occlusion >70% of the posterior tibial and pedia arteries is found in most subjects, therefore, there is a relationship between these variables and amputation. Vascular occlusion of the posterior tibial and pedia arteries >70% and sepsis were associated for major amputation of the lower limb in diabetic patients. Conclusions: Major amputation of the lower limbs as a result of diabetic foot occurs in most patients and is associated with sepsis, vascular occlusion of the posterior tibial arteries and Wagner stage.
