The marine otter, Lontra felina, is a generalist carnivore with marked differences in diet throughout its distribution on the southeastern Pacific coasts, as northern populations (Peru) are mainly piscivorous, while southern populations (Chile) are predominantly durophagous (e.g. crustaceans). Feeding differences exist between extant species of otters (Lutrinae) and have been associated with disparity in the proportions of the skull and mandible. Given that L. felina has not been included in quantitative analyzes, it is unknown whether its anatomy corresponds to any of the ecomorphotypes established for otters –piscivore or durophagous– and if it presents geographic or sexual variations. The objective of this study was to establish the feeding ecomorphotype of Lontra felina in a phylogenetic context and to investigate its intraspecific morphological variation. Using geometric morphometrics, the cranial and mandibular morphology of specimens of Lontra felina from Peru and Chile and 15 other mustelid species were quantified. The interspecific comparison was approached by principal component analysis with phylogenetic mapping and intraspecific variations were evaluated using discriminant analyzes and t tests. The morphometric analyzes showed that the marine otter presents a mixed feeding ecomorphotype, with characteristics of both the piscivore (more elongated, flat and narrow skulls, more elongated jaws and larger angular processes) and the durophagous (shorter, convex and wider skulls, larger molariform areas and shorter jaws). The intraspecific analyzes indicated the absence of sexual dimorphism, but revealed geographic differences in shape associated with the latitudinal variation in the diet between Peru and Chile. Thus, Peruvian populations exhibited longer and narrower skulls, characteristic of the piscivorous ecomorphotype, and Chilean populations, shorter and wider skulls, typical of the durophagous ecomorphotype. Considering the genetic differences previously reported, our results support the existence of an ongoing allopatric speciation process driven by the diet and whose knowledge is of relevance for its conservation.
