Intimate partner violence is a persistent social problem over time. During the dating the bases of the relationship are structured, causing stress, tension that can produce the appearance of violent behaviors. There is a need to research intimate partner violence and the coping strategies used. This research has a quantitative approach; it is descriptive - correlational. The analyzed sample was made up of 335 unmarried university students from a Health Sciences Faculty. The types of violence most frequently found were: detachment 76.4%, coercion 74.3% and gender based 52.5%; the male participants present higher percentages of victimization. Adequate emotional support is present in 42.1% of the sample and confidential support in 47.2%. Intimate partner violence is associated with the stress coping strategy: Open Emotional Expression, considering social support networks with high significance, p <0.018 and α = 0.05 (Contingency coefficient = 0.131 <p = 0.05), implying a bidirectionality of violence. The relationship between the frequency of violence and the type of coping strategy used is discussed and recommendations on violence prevention were made.
