Objective: To determine the association between sugar consumption and tooth decay in children under 12 years of age in a rural community in Peru. Methods: Observational, transversal and descriptive study. Based on data collected by the household and oral health survey, conducted by the Waynanuna group of the Academic Department of Social Dentistry of the Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia, in 2018 at the A.A.H.H Fray Martín de Porras, Yaután - Ancash. The variables analyzed were sugar and tooth decay. The data obtained were analyzed using Stata statistical software (StataCorp. 2015. Stata Statistical Software: Release 14. College Station, TX: StataCorp LP.). A 95% confidence interval was used in the analyses. And a comparison was made between caries and sugar consumption using the Mann-Whitney U tests, Kruskal Wallis and Spearman correlation coefficient. Results: An association was found between the consumption in the last 15 days of sugar with the number of dental caries, where the consumption of sodas had a rate of increase of 1.65 (95% CI 1.08 - 2.51) times greater, than those children under 12 years who do not consume sodas. Conclusions: Although no association was found with the consumption of soda, chocolates, candy, honey and jam with the number of dental caries, it was found that the product with the highest frequency of consumption in the last 15 days was soda.
