Background: Diabetes mellitus type 2 (DM2) is a serious health problem and adherence to treatment plays a fundamental role in avoiding complications of the disease. Objective: To determine the association between health literacy and other factors with adherence to treatment in patients with DM2. Materials and methods: This is an observational, analytical, case-control study that included patients with a diagnosis of DM2 greater than or equal to one year. 148 cases (non-adherent) and 148 controls (adherent) were evaluated. The independent variables were: health literacy, age, level of education, time of evolution of the disease, comorbidity and number of visits to the doctor in the last 12 months. A bivariate and multivariate analysis was performed applying a multiple logistic regression model. Results: Health literacy was not associated with non-adherence to treatment in patients with DM2. The factors associated with non-adherence to treatment were: a low socioeconomic level (OR 5.55; 95% CI, 1.71 - 18.03), high comorbidity (OR 2.9; 95% CI, 1.06 - 4.13) and time of illness from 1 to 10 years of diabetes (OR 2.00; 95% CI, 1.29 - 3.30). Conclusions: Health literacy was not associated with non-adherence to treatment in these patients. However, the associated factors were: low socioeconomic level, time of illness from 1 to 10 years and high comorbidity.
