Background: Mandibular molars are multiradicular teeth with a complex and variable anatomy, the recognition of this could reduce possible complications during and after dental treatment. Objective: To determine the frequency of the variants of the internal configuration of the canals and number of roots of the first and second permanent mandibular molars evaluated in cone beam computed tomography. Materials and methods: Cross sectional, observational, descriptive and retrospective study. 572 tomographies were reviewed, obtaining 1458 images of mandibular first and second molars where the variables evaluated were: number of roots, number of roots canals, shape of canals and root isthmus. Absolute and relative frequencies were obtained. The Chi square test were applied using the SPSS software version 25. Results: 2 roots were found in first and second mandibular molars with 93,57% and 71,94% respectively; 3 root canals were found in 76,61% of the first mandibular molars and 2 canals 50,89% in the second molars; c-shaped canals were found in 1,78% of the first molars and in 26,41% of the second molars, the cervical isthmus was found in a range of 0,14% and 22,7% in the mesial and distal roots of the mandibular molars evaluated. Conclusions: The study revealed similar results compared to other populations in terms of the number of roots and the variants of the internal configuration of the first and second mandibular molars.
