The objective of the study was to describe the management of contraception and unwanted pregnancy of dogs among the residents of Ventanilla district. For this, an observational, descriptive and cross-sectional research was carried out based on surveys applied to adult habitants who own at least one dog, from 13 human settlements. The variables studied were: contraception management practices, pregnancy management and fate of unwanted offspring, perception about the management of unwanted offspring and consequences of the absence of reproductive control in dogs. 400 surveys were collected. The total number of declared dogs totaled 828. Of these, 6% of the males were neutered (27/452) and 26.1% of the females sterilized (98/376). 44.5% of those surveyed mentioned private veterinary clinics as the places where residents could go to neuter or sterilize their dogs. The reason for accepting neutering / spaying was due to the fact that they didn’t wish to have more animals in their homes and that they would avoid an excess population of dogs. On the other hand, the reason for not accepting it was the lack of financial resources to pay for these procedures. 58% of the participants stated that they were willing to perform a surgical control on males and females. Regarding the fate of the pups in case of an unwanted pregnancy in female dogs, the majority indicated that they as owners would give it up for adoption (87.4%), but that in the community the most common was their abandonment (71.8 %). The main consequences related to the presence of stray dogs would be the affectation of animal welfare (disease, malnourished, injured) (40.8%) and would increase environmental contamination by faeces and garbage dispersal (37.3%). It is concluded that the breeding and management of dogs in this population should be improx`ved.
