Background: Menstrual cycle tracking applications (MCTAs) have become especially popular among women because of their practicality and availability. Studies have evaluated their use as an aid in conception, contraception, register of last menstrual period to calculate the gestational age or record menstrual symptoms. However, the uses of MCTAs have not been previously studied in a scoping review. Objective: The aim of this study is to evaluate the utility of MCTA’s for menstrual symptom tracking, conception and anticonception. Materials and methods: A scoping review of randomized controlled trials was conducted using PubMed, CENTRAL and Scopus. Results: Five studies were included that evaluated the use of MCTA’s on symptom reporting, satisfaction and number of wanted and unwanted pregnancies. There was a decrease in the incidence of menstrual symptoms when using a MCTA that provided information on how to alleviate them, but an increase of them when daily monitoring was offered. Conception increased when a MCTA with an ovulation test was used and decreased when using a mobile version of the cyclebeads method. Conclusion: This study shows that MCTA’s may aid in conception as well as in anticonception. Also that there is a higher satisfaction rate among users compared to traditional methods; however its use for symptom reporting is unclear.
