Background: Seizures correspond to the first neurological cause of attention in the pediatric emergency services. There is a lack of studies related to this pathology in our country and the studies performed in other countries present differences with our context. Objective: Describe the clinical characteristics of pediatric patients that attend Cayetano Heredia’s Hospital for a first epileptic seizure. Methods: An observational, prospective, case series study that included children from 1 month old to 14 years old who attended for a first epileptic seizure during the period of 12 months. The data collection was made by filling a form that included questions about the event and review of medical records. Results: 39 patients were included. The mean age was 52.6 months. The most frequent type of crisis was the generalized seizure with 82% (32/39), especially tonic-clonic type with 61.5% (24/39). The etiology with the highest percentage was the febrile crisis with 35.9% (14/39), followed by acute central nervous system infections with 18% (7/39) and cranioencephalic trauma with 12.8% (5/39). Regarding the medication given at the time of admission, 46.1% received 1 or 2 medications. While, at discharge, 33.3% of the participants needed at least 1 medication. Regarding the auxiliary exams, 30.8% had the indication for an electroencephalogram, 33.3% had a computed tomography and 20.5% had a magnetic resonance imaging. Conclusions: Generalized tonic- clonic seizures were the most frequent type and the main etiology were febrile seizures, acute central nervous system infections and cranioencephalic trauma. One third of patients require medication after hospital discharge.
