Objective: To estimate the frequency of metabolic syndrome and hyperuricemia in outpatients of the Nutrition and Endocrinology Services of the Hospital Nacional Arzobispo Loayza. Methods: Descriptive cross-sectional study. Data from all outpatient patients was evaluated using the patient registry from the described services. The diagnosis of metabolic syndrome was defined according to AHA/NHLBI. Hyperuricemia was considered at serum uric acid values ≥7mg/100mL. We explored the relationship between metabolic syndrome (MS), its components, and serum uric acid (UA). Results: We studied 361 participants. 65.7% presented MS. The frequency of hyperuricemia was 18.8%. The frequency of hyperuricemia and metabolic syndrome was 19%. We found that for every 1cm increase in waist circumference or 10mg/dL of triglycerides, UA increases by 0.04 and 0.02mg/100mL respectively (p<0.001 and 0.049). We found no association between MS and hyperuricemia (p=0.572). Conclusion: The frequency of MS and hyperuricemia is high in the study population. Despite finding a relationship between some components of MS and UA, the frequency of MS did not affect the presence of hyperuricemia.
