Wild animals represent the source of most emerging infections globally. Antibiotic resistance through extended spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL) production is the most common and the most important for public health. There are also pathogenic or invasive Enterobacteriaceae that may present virulence factors in diarrheagenic Escherichia coli and hypermucoviscosal Klebsiella pneumoniae. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the frequency of E. coli and Klebsiella sp. producers of ESBL, together with the presence of their main virulent genes stx1, stx2, eae and hylA in the case of E. coli and the magA and rmpA genes in K. pneumoniae in non-human primates from rescue centers of the Maynas province, Loreto, Peru. From 28 rectal samples, a total of 229 strains were isolated among E. coli with 89.5%, Klebsiella sp. 8.7% (K. pneumoniae subsp. Pneumoniae 8.3% and K. oxytoca 0.4%), Enterobacter aerogenes 1.3% and Raoultella ornithinolytica 0.4%. 35.7% of the animals sampled were positive for the ESBL phenotype, 25% being positive for E. coli, 7.1% positive for K. pneumoniae subsp. pneumoniae ESBL and 3.5% positive for both agents. It was not detected virulent genes in any of the isolates. Nonhuman primates from the New World in semi-captivity represent a reservoir of ESBL enterobacteria.
