Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a metabolic disease whose prevalence has been increasing. Among the acute complications of this disease are diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), hyperosmolar hyperglycemic state (HHS), mixed state (MS) and hypoglycemia, which are important causes of morbidity and mortality in these patients. These acute complications have been evaluated in many countries, but in our country there are no updated data. Objective: To describe the characteristics of acute complications of diabetes in patients attending the emergency department of the Hospital Nacional Arzobispo Loayza, during September 2019 to March 2020. Materials and Methods: Descriptive and cross-sectional study in patients who attended the Emergency Department of the Hospital Nacional Arzobispo Loayza with acute complications of diabetes mellitus. Demographic, clinical and laboratory characteristics and patient destination were recorded; these were entered into the STATA 14 program for analysis. Results: 22 patients with acute complications of DM were admitted to the emergency department. Fifteen patients had hyperglycemic crisis (HC) and 7 had hypoglycemia. Of the patients with HC, 12 (80%) were DKA and 3 (20%) HHS. Diabetes of recent diagnosis 46.67%. The most frequent triggering factor was infections with 60%. In 50% of patients with DKA, the presentation was severe. Conclusion: DKA is the most frequent acute complication in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM2) and the most frequent trigger was infections.
