Up to three sympatric species of caimanines inhabit Amazonian environments, but ~13 million years ago six species cohabited in the "Pebas System", an aquatic ecosystem dominated by lakes and swamps. Among them, Kuttanacaiman iquitosensis, Caiman wannlangstoni and Gnatusuchus pebasensis, were small-sized caimanines (~2-3 m long) with robust jaws and globular posterior teeth with severe wear. Because of this anatomy and the diversity and abundance of mollusks with anti-predatory adaptations that inhabited the Pebas System, a durophagous diet was postulated for them, with Gnatusuchus using the mandible to excavate muddy bottoms, a novel feeding strategy among crocodylians. This hypothesis based on qualitative evidence needs to be examined with analyses that allow solid ecological inferences with quantitative arguments. This project proposes to analyze the durophagy hypothesis using geometric morphometrics, a tool applied in extinct crocodilians to establish habitat and diet. Since most living species have snouts of "intermediate" proportions, corresponding to a generalist feeding ecology, this type of analysis would allow us to corroborate whether these three caimanines really deviate from this eco-morphotype and could represent a typical durophagous one. If their morphologies do not deviate from the generalist one, a more varied diet could be assumed for them. For Gnatusuchus, the analysis would allow us to quantify their morphological differences in association with their possible burrowing strategy. The analyses will provide tools to evaluate the ecological flexibility of crocodilians in the face of environmental changes as a function of their morphology.
