The increase in the frequency of Enterobacteriaceae producing extended-spectrum β-lactamases (ESBL) represents a serious threat to both veterinary clinical practice and public health. In this context, it is suggested that dogs are reservoirs and potencial transmitters of these pathogens to humans. The objective of this study is to determine the presence of ESBL-producing Escherichia coli, Klebsiella spp. and Enterobacter spp. in healthy dogs of the Cayetano Heredia Veterinary Teaching Clinic (San Martín de Porres, Lima). Faecal samples from healthy dogs (n=58) were seeded in HiCrome™ ESBL agar base. The isolated strains were subjected to biochemical tests and seeded on McConkey agar. Subsequently, confirmation of ESBL-producing strains was carried out using the Double Disc Synergy test (DDST) described by "The European Committee on Antimicrobial Susceptibility Testing" (EUCAST). The frequency of ESBL-producing E. coli and Klebsiella spp. was 44.83% (n=26/58) and 6.89% (n=4/58), respectively; however, presence of Enterobacter spp. was discarded. In addition, a statistically significant association was found between females and the carrier status of ESBL-producing E. coli and Klebsiella spp. (p=0.02).
