Resistance in plants is classified as qualitative and quantitative according to the phenotypic resistance observed against a pathogen. The qualitative resistance is given by the R genes, which encode proteins with the NBS-LRR domain and confer complete resistance to specific pathogens. On the other hand, the quantitative resistance is given by the quantitative resistance loci (QRL), which group genes with less individual effect but together confer broad resistance. However, some R genes are located in QRL and confer quantitative resistance. For this reason, homologues to R genes, called resistance gene analogs (RGAs), can be considered as R or part of QRL and based on the NBS-LRR domain it is possible to identify them in sequenced genomes using bioinformatics tools. The late blight, caused by Phytophthora infestans, is the most devastating disease of the potato crop. In developing countries, where fungicide management is inadequate and production losses threaten the food security of farmers, resistant plants are an attractive option for sustainable agriculture. Resistance genes to P. infestans have been identified in different potato species to be used in plant breeding, as well as RGAs. However, there are no genetic studies of resistance in native Peruvian potatoes despite the wide existing diversity. As background information, an accesion of the Wira Pasña variety (CIP 704270) of Solanum goniocalyx showed phenotypic resistance against the POX 67 strain of P. infestans and a comparative transcriptomic analysis in leaf against the pathogen with this and a susceptible accesion of the same species has been carried out. From this RNA-seq analysis, the objective of the present work will be to identify NBS-LRR RGAs in the resistant accesion of the Wira Pasña variety (CIP 704270) of S. goniocalyx using bioinformatic tools, being this approach used in similar studies.
