In recent decades, the domestic pigeon has increased in population along with demographic growth. This could represent a problem for public health since their droppings can carry pathogenic microorganisms, such as Cryptococcus. The cryptococcosis produced by Cryptococcus neoformans affects immunosuppressed populations. In that regards, the accumulation of pigeon droppings in hospitals represents a risk of contagion since they act as a transmission vehicle. The objective of the present study was detecting the presence of C. neoformans in fecal samples from birds existing in hospitals in Lima Peru. For this purpose, dry stool samples locating near to flocks of pigeons belonging to two hospitals in the north and center of Lima were taken. The samples were cultured on Nigger Seed agar; and, to confirm the presence of C. neoformans, the presence of capsules was observed, besides, the urease test and growth on canavanine glycine blue bromothymol sodium agar were carried out in order to differentiate from C. gattii. Likewise, confirmation at the molecular level was performed by using the PCR technique and an antifungigram was conducted by using the disk diffusion technique. Of the 68 samples collected, in 8.8% confirmed strains of Cryptococcus spp. were isolated, all of them identified as C. neoformans. A total of 33 positive strains were identified, with only 78.8% confirmed as C. neoformans by molecular methods.. The 30.3% of the strains were resistant to Fluconazole, 60.6% was resistant to Amphotericin B and 97% was resistant to Itraconazole. All strains were sensitive to Voriconazole. Pigeon droppings inside and outside hospitals represent a potential reservoir of C. neoformans, having more than 50% of strains found with resistance in vitro to more than one antifungal used as therapy for cryptococcosis.
