This research aimed to describe how a group of the primary undergraduate student teachers used substantive knowledge and meta-concepts in the elaboration of their historical narratives about the Peruvian Independence process. To do this, a qualitative and phenomenological methodology was used. The instrument of levels of complexity of the substantive knowledge and meta-concepts (Sáiz and Gómez, 2016) was used for the analysis Additionally, open coding was performed to identify emerging categories in student narratives. Most narratives showed low levels of complexity in the use of meta-concepts and the zero level in the use of substantive knowledge. These narratives were characterized by being linear and presenting monocausal explanations focused on the intentions of agents and a poor recognition of changes and continuities in the historical process. Moreover, the reasons about the historical relevance of the process analyzed were not explained, nor were relations established between the past, present and future. It also identified the presence of several of the traits of master narratives conceived from a romantic nation approach. In this context, it is considered essential that the pre-service teachers identify and reflect critically on their representations around historical knowledge, their teaching and learning, and that this be regarded as one of the axes of teacher education to teach history.
