All over the world there are different types of soils that have their benefits and disadvantages. Most of these disadvantaged soils need improvement or strengthening. Before adopting soil improvement, a geotechnical analysis should be performed to assess the characteristics of the soil to be treated. The physical and mechanical qualities of the soil are improved. There are several ways to improve the soil; The best known is the gravel column, which is economical and is usually used in low-rise structures, such as embankments. It also has drawbacks, since the interaction of its aggregates can cause unforeseen settlements. In this study, a part of the construction of the gravel column is replaced by unreinforced concrete to increase the dynamism of the column. The concrete column has different heights, including columns adjacent to the foundation. Apart from investigating the effect of the different columns, the optimal column of the study was presented. Twelve prototypes were made in which this research used the concept of unit cell where a column is located in the center and around the clay soil, in order to then apply axial loads with the simple compression machine. The hybrid columns which is the combination of the gravel column and the concrete column, it was observed that the increase in the height of the concrete had a better performance in the resulting columns when there was a considerable distance from the ground below it. The hybrid columns performed better than the traditional stone column. Physical modeling of the scale prototypes revealed that the length of column elevation ranges from 2.4 to 2.8 D (D is the diameter of the column). Test results for the optimal hybrid column yielded a maximum load improvement factor of up to 1.25 times depending on the prototype compared to the gravel column. The evaluation of this new concept for soil improvement, provides and promotes settlement reduction and economic advantage.
