ABSTRACT The objective of the research was to determine the effect of including 2% fennel infusion (Foeniculum vulgare Mill.) in the diet of lactating sows on their productive parameters and their litters at weaning. Thirty-six Large White breeders of the Topigs genetic line were distributed under a completely randomized design in three treatments: treatment without infusion (T0), treatment with 250 mL of infusion (T1) and treatment with 500 mL of infusion (T2). The characteristics evaluated were litter weight increase, piglet weight uniformity, percentage of morbidity and mortality, feed consumption, weaning-heat interval, reduction in body condition and chest circumference after weaning. The results showed that the feed consumption of the piglets was reduced in T2, with significant differences being found between the treatments (P<0.05). In addition, T2 had better values for the increase in litter weight, the percentage of piglet mortality, the reduction in body condition and chest perimeter. However, there were no improvements in the uniformity of piglet weights, the percentage of morbidity and the weaning interval, and no significant differences were found between treatments (P>0.05). Treatment T2 had the best benefit-cost ratio. It is concluded that 2% fennel infusion does not significantly improve the productive parameters of sows and their litters during lactation.
