ABSTRACT The objective of this research was to analyze the relationship between the competition of the microfinance sector and the profitability of the Municipal Savings and Credit Banks of Peru (CMAC) for the period 2008 - 2018. The market structure estimated by the Herfindahl Hirschman index was used ( IHH) and the return on equity (ROE) was used as an indicator of profitability. The analysis was argued from the perspective of the Structure-Behavior-Performance (ECD) paradigm theory and the Efficiency Hypothesis. To estimate the study parameters, a linear regression model was established, with the cointegration methodology through error correction vectors (VEC). The results found in the study period reveal that greater competition in the microfinance system reduces the profitability of the Municipal Savings and Credit Banks of Peru (CMAC). Likewise, this study showed evidence in favor of the theory of the "Efficiency Hypothesis", where it indicates that profitability has a greater degree of explanation in the efficiency of CMACs than in their market structure.
