ABSTRACT The objective of this research was to analyze a sample of malacological remains from Menocucho, a settlement in the interior of the Moche valley, from the Initial Period, to address dietary issues, answering central questions of subsistence in the communities of the middle valley. The aim was to answer questions such as: did the middle valley communities consume malacological resources, and if so, what type of resources did they consume and were they cooked. The thesis was proposed to quantitatively demonstrate that mollusks complemented the subsistence of Menocucho by complementing the diet. Also, show that some mollusks were used as ornamental objects. In the same way, demonstrate that access to these resources would come from the coast of Huanchaco. To answer the questions posed, an analysis is carried out from a taxonomic identification (NMI) perspective, which has allowed the sample to be quantified. Complemented with a macroscopic analysis, which allowed the sample to be characterized. All the information has allowed us to understand the practices related to diet. A universe of 1787 mollusks was analyzed, coming from three areas. It has been conclusively determined that mollusks complemented Menocucho's diet; in fact, the bivalve class is the one that is best represented, which provided abundant meat content. Likewise, some burning patterns were identified that allow us to postulate some preparation practice that involved certain species by chance. Some drilling patterns also allow us to determine that certain gastropods have been processed for non-domestic activities.
