During the COVID pandemic, one of the greatest challenges has been the care of patients hospitalised in intensive care units (ICU), with the most frequent in-hospital infection being urinary tract infection caused by enterobacteria. The research aimed to determine the frequency of enterobacteria-positive urine cultures in hospitalised COVID ICU patients at the Hospital Regional Docente de Trujillo (HRDT), April 2020 to August 2021. For this purpose, urine culture data were obtained from the records of the Microbiology Department and the hospital database to determine age group and sex. Of the total of 531 urine cultures processed, 83 were caused by enterobacteria (16%); the most frequent being Escherichia coli (38.6%), Klebsiella pneumoniae (37.3%), Proteus mirabilis (8. 4%), Enterobacter cloacae (6.0%), Klebsiella oxytoca (3.6%), Providencia alcalifaciens (2.4%), Citrobacter freundii (1.2%), Enterobacter faecalis (1.2%) and Providencia rettgeri (1.2%). With respect to age group, adults had a higher frequency of urinary tract infections, with 61.4%, and females were more exposed with 72.2%. Using the chi-square statistical analysis, it was determined that the age group variable is a risk factor linked to infections caused by enterobacteria. It was concluded that the frequency of enterobacteria isolated from patients treated in the COVID ICU of the HRDT from April 2020 to August 2021 was 16 %, with E. coli being the most frequent and Providencia rettgeri the least frequent. In addition, age group is a risk factor associated with enterobacterial infections, while the sex variable does not have a significant influence.
