Abstract: La presente investigación tiene como objetivo mostrar las propiedades funcionales de la guayaba (Psidium guajava L.), y sus beneficios para la salud, con base en una revisión bibliográfica de información científica confiable, de esta manera la investigación se centró principalmente en el fruto y en las hojas de guayaba, de las cuales se detalla una compleja composición de compuestos químicos antioxidantes, destacando su contenido de fenoles, así como de terpenos en sus aceites esenciales, los cuales le confieren propiedades funcionales importantes, como la capacidad de captar radicales libres causantes del estrés oxidativo, aumentar la viabilidad de las células β pancreáticas, proteger a los tejidos de los efectos destructivos de la peroxidación de lípidos y el daño del ADN, contrarrestar la formación de citosinas de naturaleza proinflamatoria, mejorar las funciones vasculares, inhibir el proceso de glicación de proteínas, así como capacidad antimicrobiana, lo cual presenta a la guayaba ya sea de forma natural, o mediante la extracción de sus compuestos activos como una alternativa interesante para el tratamiento de enfermedades cardiovasculares, cáncer, diabetes, o para tratar condiciones clínicas como infecciones, diarreas, caries o inflamaciones de tejidos entre otras.
ABSTRACT The present research aims to show the functional properties of guava (Psidium guajava L.), and its health benefits, based on a bibliographic review of reliable scientific information, so the research focused mainly on the fruit and guava leaves, of which a complex composition of antioxidant chemical compounds is detailed, highlighting their content of phenols and terpenes in essential oils, which confer important functional properties, such as the ability to capture free radicals causing oxidative stress, increase the viability of cells β pancreatic, to protect tissues from the destructive effects of lipid peroxidation and DNA damage, to counteract the formation of cytosines of a pro-inflammatory nature, to improve vascular functions, to inhibit the protein glycation process, as well as antimicrobial capacity, which presents guava either naturally, or by the extraction of its active compounds as an interesting alternative for the treatment of cardiovascular diseases, cancer, diabetes, or to treat clinical conditions such as infections, diarrhoea, caries or tissue inflammations among others.
