ABSTRACT The title of this research is Gender stereotypes and the empowerment of the merchants of the central market 6A, Alto Trujillo, 2022, whose objective is to analyze the gender stereotypes that influence the level of empowerment of the merchants of the central market 6A, Alto Trujillo. The methodology was qualitative and quantitative; A questionnaire on empowerment was applied, which was taken from the study “Instrument to measure women's empowerment” with 34 questions. Another questionnaire was an adaptation based on expert judgment, taken from the research “The questionnaire of attitudes towards gender equality (CAIG): development and psychometric study” was adapted to 10 questions. In addition, an interview was applied to the merchants to complement the answers to the questionnaires. The sample population was 30 merchants from the 6A central market, Alto Trujillo. It contains as theoretical bases the theory of social identity of Tajfel and Turner, the theory of Social Learning of Albert Bandura, the theory of Social Role of Eagly, gender approach, model of women's empowerment of Margaret Schuler and theory of women's empowerment. Zimmerman. This study has made it possible to verify that gender stereotypes negatively influence the participatory empowerment of the merchants, reflecting in the devaluation of their intellectual abilities in the organizational and cooperative aspect by their own peers, also in the independence of the merchants, which is evident in postponing their interests and activities.
