In the research work, the effect of leaching time, temperature and concentration of sodium persulphate concentration (Na2S2O8), on copper extraction by direct oxidative leaching of a chalcopyrite concentrate (CuFeS2) in the presence of sulphuric acid solution was evaluated. The limiting or controlling stage of the kinetics of the process and the activation energy of the reaction were also determined. The study sample consisted of a chalcopyrite concentrate from a mining company in the Lima Region, with an average chemical composition of 24.32 % copper and 25.53 % iron. The analysis of variance, carried out with leaching times of 1 to 5 hours, temperatures of 25, 40 and 60°C; and sodium persulphate concentration of 2, 4 and 6 % (w/v), determined that leaching time, temperature and sodium persulphate concentration had significant effects on the percentage of copper extraction. The highest copper extraction (51.74 %) from the chalcopyrite concentrate is achieved with a sodium persulphate concentration of 4 % (w/v), a temperature of 60°C, a leaching time of 5 hours in the presence of 2 % (v/v) sulphuric acid. The kinetic study shows that the limiting or controlling step of the process kinetics is the diffusion of the leachant ions through a porous sulphur layer attached to the chalcopyrite particle. An activation energy of 59,16 KJ⁄mol confirms that the reaction is very sensitive to temperature and that the controlling stage of the process kinetics is the diffusion of ions through the reaction product layer.
