ABSTRACT The objective of this research is to determine the relationship between the labor cost and the formalization of companies in South America in the period 2017-2020. The study was carried out using a quantitative approach with a non-experimental, longitudinal design, with a correlational scope. The sample consisted of six countries: Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru. A documentary file was used to record statistical data collected by the International Labor Organization. To carry out the inferential statistical analysis, a previous normality test was carried out, which indicated the need to use the Pearson R parametric correlation test. During the 2017-2020 period, Chile presents the highest labor cost per hour; followed by Peru and Brazil. In the case of Argentina, their values begin to rise from the year 2019, while in Ecuador they begin to decrease in the same year. Colombia, for its part, presents the lowest labor costs on a constant basis. Regarding the percentage of formal companies, Chile presents the highest percentage, followed by Brazil, Argentina and Ecuador. While Colombia and Peru have the lowest percentages. Finally, the empirical analysis carried out and its comparison with the reviewed background shows that there is no relationship between a high labor cost and less business formalization. These results indicate that this problem is more complex, since other factors could influence the formalization of companies, such as the level of corruption, business culture, etc.
