ABSTRACT The aim of this research was to identify the determinants of inequality in the distribution of income in Latin America during the period 2000-2021, through a descriptive analysis and the estimation of an econometric model of panel data with fixed effects. For this, information from 14 Latin American countries was used: Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, El Salvador, Mexico, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Dominican Republic and Uruguay. The evolution of inequality in the distribution of income in Latin America, measured through the Gini index, constituting itself as a dependent variable, and the behavior of economic growth, poverty, labor income, trade openness and redistributive policies were analyzed, constituting themselves as explanatory variables. It was concluded that inequality in the distribution of income has decreased between 2000 and 2021, but a deceleration in its reduction is observed in the last decade. Likewise, given the individual and overall statistical significance of the explanatory variables in the estimated econometric model, as well as the coefficient of determination obtained of 95%, the economic growth measured by GDP per capita, the poverty headcount ratio, the labor income, trade openness, and redistributive policies through direct taxes and spending on social protection, were identified as determinants of inequality in the distribution of income in Latin America in the period 2000- 2021.
