Abstract: El aumento espectacular de la producción y la falta de biodegradabilidad de los polímeros comerciales, especialmente el poliestireno y polipropileno que se utiliza en la industria del embalaje y produce una enorme contaminación del medio ambiente, problema que podría persistir durante siglos nos llevó a plantearnos el objetivo de reportar información reciente sobre los productos naturales que se podrían utilizar para reemplazar a los mencionados plásticos que se usan en las actividades comerciales para depender menos de los derivados del petróleo. Se reporta que entre los cereales, se ha utilizado el triticale, la quinua, maíz y trigo y entre los tubérculos se ha encontrado estudios de la papa, camote y yuca que dan buenos resultados en cuanto a las propiedades de permeabilidad al agua, usando técnicas adecuadas en cada caso.
ABSTRACT The dramatic increase in production and lack of biodegradability of commercial polymers, especially polystyrene and polypropylene used in the packaging industry, produces an enormous environmental pollution, a problem that could persist for centuries. The aim of this research was to report information on natural products that could be used to replace the mentioned plastics used in commercial activities and also to reduce dependence on petroleum. It is reported that among cereals, has been used triticale, quinoa, corn and wheat and between tubers it was found studies of potato, sweet potato and cassava that give good results regarding the properties of water permeability, using techniques appropriate in each case.
