The objective of this research thesis was to specify the influence of the problem-solving strategy "ABP" to improve the academic performance of mathematics in the third grade students of Secondary Education of the I.E "San Ramón" of Cajamarca, in the year 2017. This problem-based strategy is an active teaching method that is characterized by producing learning from the solution of a real-life problem. The Quasi-experimental design was used with a sample of 30 students divided into two groups: experimental and control with 15 students each. The techniques used were: observation, registration and evaluation, in which a pre-test and post-test were applied that were validated by expert judgment. Among the results, it can be seen that there is a highly significant difference between the pre-test and post-test of the experimental group, which allows us to conclude that the application of the problem-solving strategy "ABP" significantly influences the improvement of academic performance in mathematics. in the third grade students of secondary education of the I.E.E "San Ramón" of Cajamarca, in the year 2017.
