The diagnosis of cancer in children requires essential attention and care for treatment and recovery, which represents a challenge for both families and health professionals. The objective was: To describe and understand experiences of the nursing professional in the care of pediatric oncology patients in a level III hospital in Chiclayo, 2023. Qualitative study with exploratory descriptive design. The sample size was 12 nurses who work in the pediatric hematology service of the aforementioned hospital, delimited by saturation and redundancy. A semi-structured interview guide validated by experts was used to collect data. The data were processed and analyzed using the thematic content analysis method. The results were represented by four categories: a) Emotional aspect in the nurse-oncology child-family caregiver relationship: An empathetic and spiritual approach, b) Management and well-being of the child with cancer in the face of the side effects of oncological treatment, c) Strategies to provide comfort to the child and the family caregiver and d) Difficulties in caring for the hospitalized child with cancer. It is concluded that nursing professionals experience an emotional bond with cancer children and their mothers focused on empathy, but are affected when these children worsen, die or die. Despite this, they promote children's comfort through distraction with their toys, being accompanied by their mother, with healthy food and sometimes her preference. A situation that also requires adequate infrastructure for children with a playful environment.
