This research's objective is to improve preventive maintenance to increase the mechanical availability of a fleet of heavy trucks through the implementation of the Reliability-Centered Maintenance (RCM) methodology. This strategy aims to maximize mechanical availability and extend the lifespan of assets, thereby contributing to more effective and profitable fleet management. The process is divided into two phases. In the first phase, reliability analysis was performed using the Weibull distribution with the collected field data. This step aims to determine the failure curve and the reliability value of the heavy trucks during their lifecycle, as well as to find the values of Mean Time Between Failures (MTBF) and Mean Time to Repair (MTTR). The second phase involves the execution of the RCM approach. This stage is developed through several steps, beginning with the creation of work teams and the identification of the critical systems of the heavy trucks. Subsequently, their functions, functional failures, failure modes and effects are determined, and the current Risk Priority Number (RPN) is evaluated using the Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA) tool. Based on this information, specific maintenance recommendations are developed to address these issues, creating new maintenance guidelines. Finally, five months after the implementation of the RCM, its impact is evaluated by measuring mechanical availability and the profitability of the truck fleet operations again.
