The complex process of tooth development begins in the early stages of embryonic development and extends into the early years of life. Throughout this process the teeth are susceptible to the action of multifactorial etiological agents; mainly genetic and environmental; consequently, changes in the number, size, shape, structure or color of the teeth can result. To this set of pathological entities derived from disorders in the development of the teeth we denominate alterations of the dental development or dental anomalies. These occur both in the primary dentition and in the permanent dentition, in isolation or associated with a syndromic alteration and may compromise the function, esthetics and normal development of the occlusion. This review of the literature develops the main dental alterations originated in the period of odontogenesis; emphasizing its etiology, diagnosis and treatment options; with the purpose of performing an early detection, establishing treatment measures and in some cases improving the quality of life of the patients presenting it
