The aim of the present study was to determine the frequency of the position of the lower third molar retained using the Winter Classification and the proximity of the third molar to the inferior dental canal using the Robert Langlais Classification. The study is descriptive, cross-sectional, observational and retrospective, the sample was of 300 digital panoramic radiographs with presence of bilateral third molars in total 600 pieces, which were evaluated taking into account Winter's classification for the position of the lower third molar retained and the Classification of Robert Langlais for the proximity to the inferior dental canal. The results obtained with regard to the Winter classification were observed in a greater percentage with the vertical position with 48.5%, followed by the mesioangular with 35.3% and in less quantity the distoangular with 5%, according to the Langlais Classification to evaluate proximity to the CDI the CDI was presented in greater percentage intact with 82.5% and in smaller quantity the change of direction of the CDI 0.3%, the vertical position was presented with greater frequency with 28% in the female sex, the intact CDI was presented in greater frequency for the female sex with 46.1%, the Vertical position was found in a greater number of cases for the right side with 50%. The intact CDI was presented in greater number of cases on the right side with 83.3%. In conclusion, the vertical position of the lower third molar was found more frequently in the female sex and in the right side evaluated.
