The objective of this study was to determine if the aqueous extract of the mesocarp of Cucurbita ficifolia B. (pumpkin), has an antioxidant effect in the lipoperoxidation induced by paracetamol in the liver of Holtzman rats. The phytochemical screening was performed by Olga's method, and the presence of secondary metabolites such as alkaloids, tannins and flavonoids was evidenced. The antioxidant effect carried out in vivo from the aqueous extract of the mesocarp of Cucurbita ficifolia B., by means of the thiobarbituric acid reaction, measuring the amount of malonal malignant aldehyde (MDA) formed, with the purpose of determining the lipid peroxidation in a homogenate of liver tissue of Holtzman rats. We worked with different concentrations; group I without treatment; group II with paracetamol without treatment, group III with silymarin at a dose of 40 mg/kg; in the following the treatment was carried out with the studied aqueous extract of Cucurbita ficifolia B.; group IV at a dose of 250 mg/kg; group V at a dose of 500 mg/kg; Group VI at a dose of 1000 mg/kg. Access to water and food was ad libitum. When performing the ANOVA statistical test a highly significant difference was evidenced (P <0.05) and in the Tukey test an antioxidant effect was observed in the dose of 500 mg/kg and 1000 mg/kg but a higher percentage of effectiveness was found in the dose of 1000 mg/kg (82.70 percent) of antioxidant effect in the lipoperoxidation of the extract of Cucurbita ficifolia B. (pumpkin). It was concluded that the study has shown that Cucurbita ficifolia B. (pumpkin), has an antioxidant effect and indirectly also, a hepatoprotective effect in vivo using the aqueous extract of the mesocarp.
