The objective of the present study is to determine the effect of 5% sodium hypochlorite on the adhesion of brackets evaluated by a shear force system. For this purpose 33 samples consisting of human premolars were used, which had intact crowns free of caries by vestibular, who did not present bleaching treatment or restoration with previous resin. In this way, they were divided into 3 groups: Group 1 or control formed by 11 premolars that were given treatment with 37% phosphoric acid; Group 2 formed by 11 premolars who were given 5% sodium hypochlorite treatment; Group 3 consisted of 11 premolars, which were combined with 37% phosphoric acid treatment and 5% sodium hypochlorite. All samples were subjected to the detachment of the bracket by a shear force system. Data analysis was carried out using the Kruskal-Wallis statistical test to identify the significance of the results. As a result, values of shear force medians were 4.36; 3.11; and 6.79 megapascals for group 1, 2 and 3, respectively. Finally it is concluded that the use of 5% sodium hypochlorite does significantly affect the adhesion of the brackets
