Manejo odontológico del paciente con alteraciones neuro-psiquiátricas

Abstract

Los pacientes con alteraciones neuropsiquiátricas tienen una mayor prevalencia de enfermedades orales que la población en general, tales como caries dental, enfermedad periodontal, bruxismo, pérdida de piezas dentarias; esto se debe a diversos factores como la medicación que reciben, miedo al odontólogo, a la ausencia de interés en el cuidado personal, al manejo del dolor mediante analgésicos, ausencia de conocimiento sobre la salud oral de éstos pacientes por parte de los familiares que los cuidan y a la falta de preparación de los profesionales para atender a éste grupo de pacientes. El objetivo del presente trabajo es estudiar los diferentes protocolos de atención odontológica de acuerdo a la patología que presentan éste grupo de pacientes, para poder mejorar su calidad de vida, puesto que el estado de salud oral tiene un gran impacto en su salud sistémica, siendo de vital importancia para el odontólogo realizar un trabajo interdisciplinario con el médico tratante para lograr el mayor beneficio de los pacientes con éste tipo de alteraciones.
