Abstract Reading comprehension is still an educational problem that has not been solved, especially in rural areas of Peru, despite the various efforts made. The present research entitled Ancestral Tales and Legends to Improve Reading Comprehension in Children in the Fourth and Fifth Grades of Primary School in the Educational Institution N° 50450 Huáscar in the Community of Ccollotaro, District of Caicay, Province of Paucartambo, Department of Cusco, The objective was to propose the strategy of ancestral stories and legends to improve reading comprehension, and with this, to answer the research question: What strategies could be used to improve reading comprehension in children of fourth and fifth grade of primary school? . To achieve our objective, our research adopts a qualitative methodology, which allowed us to collect stories and legends in Quechua from the inhabitants of the community through interviews and contests, which were then translated into Spanish. It was concluded that the interview and the contest of narration of stories and legends facilitated the memory of the stories and legends that were about to be lost in the community of Ccollotaro, in addition, it helped to know a little more about the community; its customs, its traditions, its organizations and its language. Keywords: ancestral stories and legends, reading comprehension, strategies.
