The present study had as a general research objective, to describe how formative assessment favors motivation for learning from the perspective of students of the Educational Projects course of the Primary Education specialty of a public university in Lima in 2020; in order to promote relevant strategies on the part of teachers for meaningful learning at the higher level. The participants were 20 students of the course in question, belonging to the 7th cycle, enrolled in the 2020-I semester. The methodology that is used develops the qualitative approach, descriptive scope and phenomenological design. The results show that the two study variables complement each other, favoring the formative evaluation in the motivation for student learning. However, the application of the pertinent resources for an adequate formative evaluation is in the process of consolidation by the teachers, at the same time it is reflected that the students confuse key concepts such as feedback and metacognition. In relation to motivation, it is evidenced that extrinsic motivation prevails over intrinsic motivation of students, conditioning their personal achievements to external issues. In conclusion, for formative evaluation to fulfill its real purpose, it is necessary for teachers to apply the relevant resources and strategies in the development of their class sessions.
