Peru, a country that, due to its location and geographical characteristics, has been affected by earthquakes of significant magnitude throughout its history. Earthquakes occurred mainly in the central and southern coast, as well as in the eastern part of the country, causing loss of life and impacts on the national economy. The Arequipa region has not been exempted from this phenomenon. Because of this, prevention measures and community preparedness are fundamental before a seismic event; not only in the family environment but also in the academic environment, where the educational community spends most of its time. The aim of the research was to evaluate the effectiveness of the implementation of an earthquake contingency plan at Manuel Gonzales Prada School, in which the risk scenario was analysed using the method of colour risk analysis based on the determination of the threat (hazard) and vulnerability inherent to earthquakes. In addition, a structured questionnaire was used to determine the level of knowledge of earthquake-related disasters, which was applied to all members of the educational institution. The analysis of the hazard (earthquakes) from the geographical context and the historical record indicates an IMMINENT phenomenon. The work carried out identified that the school had a high level of people’s vulnerability (social vulnerability), with a score of 0.94, followed by a medium vulnerability in the area of systems and processes with a score of 1.59 and in the area of resources with a score of 1.06. On the other hand, the application of a structured survey yielded the following results: 1) the knowledge achieved by teachers and administrative staff was HIGH, 2) students from the first to the third year had on average a LOW level of knowledge, 3) students in the fourth year achieved a MEDIUM level and 4) students in the fifth year obtained a HIGH level. Once the contingency plan was implemented and the methods applied, it was observed that both the vulnerability of people and that of systems and processes decreased, obtaining an average of 2.51 and 1.45 respectively, all of this concerning the colour method. Regarding the level of knowledge, satisfactory results were obtained, with a predominantly HIGH LEVEL corresponding to 62.5% of the total number of participants. The implementation of the contingency plan and the analysis carried out by means of both methodologies reduced social vulnerability in its three aspects (people, resources, and systems and processes), while the level of knowledge about earthquakes reached by the members was HIGH, which allows for an improvement in the response of the members of the educational institution to an earthquake.
