This research aims to evaluate the effects of a cognitive intervention program on the reading comprehension of sixth grade students in the district of Surco. We start from the conception of reading comprehension as the dynamic exchange where the message transmitted by the text is interpreted by the reader, but in turn the message affects the subject by enriching or reformulating their knowledge (Cossío, 2004). Therefore, the interaction between the reader and the text is the foundation of understanding, since the process of understanding is based on the relationship that the reader makes between the information that is presented to the information that is stored in his mind or previous knowledge. The relevance of this objective from a theoretical point of view is that it contributes to the body of research on reading comprehension in the field of cognitive psychology. The relevance of this study from a practical point of view is that it provides valuable information for the formulation of leveling programs that allow to increase and improve the level of reading comprehension in sixth grade students and thus improve their academic performance and, therefore, The quality of education. The variable "levels of reading comprehension" was chosen because one of the central problems of current education is the low level of reading comprehension. This is a basic competence in the area of communication, whose development is of great importance in a person's life as it allows them to access a series of development possibilities such as higher levels of education and work. Therefore, if we want our students to become competent readers, builders of meaning, instead of passive readers who only transfer information, it is necessary to delve into its nature, factors that make it possible and improve the way of teaching reading comprehension. . The variable "Cognitive intervention program" was chosen, since in order for a student to develop and use the skills necessary to be a competent reader, it is necessary to handle certain steps or procedures that we know as cognitive strategies. These basic strategies should be acquired at the primary level; But, if not, to level students in their acquisition, there are remedial intervention programs so that students can acquire and handle these procedures, so that an improvement in their reading comprehension is achieved. Among the variety of existing programs, the one that reinforces the cognitive skills necessary to develop reading comprehension with both literary and non-literary texts was chosen. To test the hypothesis that the cognitive intervention program significantly increases the reading comprehension levels of sixth-grade students from an educational institution in Surco, the following general procedures were carried out: processing of permits, application of the instrument to measure the level of reading comprehension, conformation of the groups and assignment of their condition (experimental or control), application of the intervention program in the experimental group, application of the post-test, statistical analysis of results and discussion of the same comparing them with those obtained by similar investigations .
