The aim of the research was to determine the relationship between the level of oral language and reading level of students starting first grade of primary education in two public educational institutions of Callao. The study was descriptive non-experimental design, transectional - correlational. The population consisted of 170 students of 1st grade, 6 years old. Oral test Language of Navarra Revised de Aguinaga, Armentia, Fraile, Olangua y Uriz (2005) and Reading Level 1 De La Cruz (1979), in their adapted versions were implemented in Lima. The results indicated that there is no significant relationship between the level of oral language and early reading level, taking into account the overall scores. As for the results in the form dimensions and use of oral language with the initial reading level, a significant but weak and negative relationship was found. The content dimension and initial reading level did not correlate, the relationship was very weak and positive. The students do not present a low level of oral language, but if they present a low level of initial reading.
